Kids Yoga 101
June 18, 2016
Today gave me a whole new perspective on yoga. Since I was introduced to yoga as a child I have often wanted to share that with other children with the hope of sparking that craving for more knowledge about the practice. Earlier this year I taught a kids yoga class to 6-9 year olds and I formatted my class to be the same as how I would teach adults. I found it hard to keep them engaged but I could tell they wanted to achieve the poses - most likely in a competitive frame of mind. I realized I needed to figure out a better way to teach kiddos when I asked the class to "send your breath and awareness to your legs," and one little boy started blowing on his legs. Needless to say I was thoroughly amused!
The news about Southtown Yoga Loft providing a Kids Yoga Workshop could not have come at a better time, however I had no idea what I was in for! Beth and Katie lead to workshop and they essentially taught us as if we were toddlers. Acting silly in front of a group of strangers is definitely awkward at first, but after a while everyone let their guard down and channeled their inner child. We went through everything from how to teach kids breathing exercises to yoga games and creative ways to keep them engaged in the class. My personal favorites were the imagination games - I think it will be fun to hear the things kids come up with!
Being in the first trimester of my own pregnancy, I feel like I was able to connect with this workshop because it made me excited to eventually share what I learned with my baby and get him/her excited about their yoga practice. After today I feel like I'm ready to take on the kids yoga classes! Can't wait to see what the future holds :)
